Ozaki Shuzo, founded around 1880 in Shingu, is the southernmost kura on Honshu, set at the heart of the World Heritage Kumano Sanzan shrines. Its rice shochu Kumano Suigun — named for the medieval Kumano navy — is vacuum-distilled from select rice, koji and ginjo lees on Kumano River subsoil water, and took second place in the national concours rice-shochu division.
