Beniotome Shuzo was founded in 1978 in Kurume by Haruno Hayashida — then 65 years old — who set out to make a fragrant spirit that could stand beside Western liquor. The result was the world's first sesame shochu. The house distils sesame, barley and sweet-potato shochu with spring water of the Minou mountains, and welcomes visitors at its Minou distillery (9:00–17:00).
