Mincho Shuho was founded in the Kansei era (1790s) as a branch of the Tsushimaya house, and serves as purveyor to the great shrine of Usa Jingu. Its name comes from the Shoku Nihongi: the priest Horen healed the people with sake, and they gathered like the tide — min-cho, the people's tide. In wartime it supplied the Usa naval air corps.
