Sato Shuzo, founded in 1917, is the only sake kura in the Kuju highlands of Taketa. Its Kuju Senbazuru was named after the novelist Yasunari Kawabata visited Kuju in 1952 while writing the sequel to Thousand Cranes and befriended the brewery's president. The house also pioneered kimoto brewing in Oita.
