Kamiya Shuzosho was founded in 1949 by Toshihiko Kamiya, naming its awamori Nanko — light of the south — as a beacon of hope in the post-war years. The house still refuses mechanisation, working by hand with its own steam-injection still, from the standard 30-degree to a 50-degree genshu.
