Shoro Shuzo began in 1928 as the Ubagasako shochu venture of about ten local farming families, taking its present name in 1971. Under third-generation head Shoji Yano it refuses the light modern style, distilling full-bodied, robust imo shochu on volcanic-ash-filtered groundwater with the kura's own yeasts. Its toji still farms — entering the kura only for the September–December brewing season.
